Actor Chadwick Boseman, perhaps best known for his star performance in Marvel's Black Panther, has died at 43.

A statement shared on Boseman's official Twitter account Friday night confirmed the star had passed in his Los Angeles home with his wife and family, four years after he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016.

"A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy," it reads.

"It was the honor of his career to bring King T'Challa to life in Black Panther."

Boseman's cancer diagnosis had not previously been public knowledge, and news of his passing came as a complete shock to many.

Boseman's screen career began in the 2000s with roles on TV series including Lincoln Heights and Persons Unknown. His first starring film role came in 2013's 42, where he played baseball legend Jackie Robinson.

He quickly snagged a string of other high-profile parts, playing James Brown in Get On Up, Thurgood Marshall in Marshall, and Thoth in Gods of Egypt, among others.

Boseman made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War before taking the lead in 2018's Black Panther, and reprised the role again for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Earlier this year, he appeared in Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods. He will next be seen with Viola Davis in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, for which he completed shooting before his death. The film does not yet have a release date.
