Using your smartphone or tablet's built-in speakers should only ever be a last resort if you want to listen to your favorite playlists on the go. Instead, you're going to want a great pair of headphones — or if you're more inclined to listen to your tunes out loud (or even with friends), a nice portable Bluetooth speaker.

Plenty of Bluetooth speakers are high-quality, while also offering the flexibility of enhanced battery life and convenience. They are great for taking out with you while you're hiking, or simply for when you're traveling and you still want to listen to your tunes on the go.

You might be wondering if it's worth splurging for an expensive speaker, if you should stick with a popular brand, or if there's a speaker that works well within the existing sound system in your home.

Whatever your needs may be, we've filtered and tested the most popular Bluetooth speakers across the internet to come up with our recommendations.

Which brand of Bluetooth speaker is the best?

Bose, JBL, Ultimate Ears, Sony, and Tribit tend to be popular Bluetooth speaker brands. It's hard to say one is definitively the best, especially because there can be a variety in performance within a brand — obviously, you shouldn't expect the $40 JBL Go 2 to sound the same as the $130 JBL Flip 6, but if the best speaker for you is the most affordable one that still gets the job done, the Go 2 might be your top overall pick.

What we can say is that these brands tend to be popular for a reason. For our guide, we put together what we consider the standouts of each brand, whether you're looking for affordability, portability, smart home compatibility, or durability.

Keep reading for our guide to the best Bluetooth speakers available in 2024.

Check out our full review of the JBL Charge 5.

Who it's for:

The JBL Charge 5 is the ultimate all-rounder, offering great sound quality with deep-but-balanced bass and an impressively long battery life (up to 20 hours at a time!) for a reasonable price.

Why we picked this:

The JBL Flip speakers tend to be the most popular options from the brand, but here's why we love the Charge 5. For starters, its name refers to this speaker's ability to charge other mobile devices (via USB-A) even when it's playing music, making it a fantastic travel companion.

The Charge 5 has an IP67 rating, meaning a waterproof and dust-proof design that's perfect for taking to the beach or to a pool party. As a bonus, it also comes in a rainbow of fun colors — grab two of them and enable their PartyBoost feature to bump your tunes throughout multiple rooms or spaces. And of course, this speaker wouldn't make our list if it didn't sound good. As Mashable contributor RJ Andersen wrote, "It’s rich, dynamic, and surprisingly clear with a decent bass that fills the room without overpowering the rest of the audio."

Check out our review of the previous version of this speaker, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2.

Who it's for:

The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3 is a powerhouse for its size and price. It’s the perfect size for traveling — you can easily stick it in your bag without it taking up any real space — and it's rugged enough to endure the normal bumps and bruises that an active lifestyle brings with it.

Why we picked this:

You can drop this small speaker from heights of up to five feet without worrying about destroying it. It’s also waterproof and floats if you drop it in water, and features a healthy 14 hours of battery life.

But the mark of a good speaker isn’t just how portable it is. What matters most is the sound — and again, the Wonderboom 3 performs, though it lacks the clear, deep bass of some larger speakers. All in all though, it has excellent sound for its size, providing stereo sound in a small package. We just wish it had a companion app with adjustable EQ, but for under $100 (this speaker often goes on sale), we'd say what you are getting with the Wonderboom 3 is well worth it.

Bose Soundlink Revolve II

Best portable Bluetooth speaker for surround sound

Who it's for:

Bose has made a name with its speakers and headphones, and the Bose SoundLink Revolve II only helps its good reputation. For folks who are willing to pay a bit more, but want a surround sound speaker experience for listening in the house or for backyard BBQs, this speaker has you covered.

Why we picked this:

This sleekly designed speaker is portable and offers true 360-degree surround sound, making for a great listening experience. It can be paired with a second speaker for stereo sound or integrated into a Bose audio system.

The speaker is easy to use and features a built-in mic that can be used to take phone calls or use your phone’s smart assistant. It also features a good battery life of 13 hours, though its charging cradle ($29.99) must be purchased separately.

Sonos Move

Best portable Bluetooth speaker for smart homes

Who it's for:

Some people want a Bluetooth speaker that's first and foremost a way to listen to music, and some people want a better audio experience than other run-of-the-mill smart speakers might be able to manage. If you fall in the later group, we recommend the Sonos Move.

Why we picked this:

This durable, battery-powered speaker is a great Bluetooth speaker for your home, especially if you want one you can move around with you — say, from the pool area to your office to the dining room. It's also strong enough to take the occasional drop or bump.

While it is portable, this speaker might not be the easiest to travel with over long distances due to its weight and bulky size. The battery lasts up to 11 hours and comes with a charging base. You can also recharge it with a USB-C charger.

This speaker is simple to set up, can be controlled through the Sonos app, and can switch from WiFi to Bluetooth streaming when needed. It’s also weather-resistant and able to stand up to humidity, rain, snow, dust, sun rays, and salt.

Who it's for:

There are portable speakers, and there are speakers that are truly built to be on the move with you. The JBL Clip 4 isn't just small and easy to carry around, but easy to clip on just about anything, from a backpack to a belt loop.

Why we picked this:

This is the ultimate portable speaker small enough to slip into basically any bag, but also gives you a backup plan with the built-in carabiner. Even though you're getting maximum portability, you're still getting 10 hours of battery life and an IP67-rated water- and dust-proof speaker that can be taken along on most adventures. When we tested this speaker, we found that it reached an impressive volume, but the sound profile can get a bit muddled the higher the volume gets. Still, for a speaker that's this easy to take along, only $70 (and frequently on sale), it still left us impressed.

JBL Go 2

Best Bluetooth speaker under $40

Who it's for:

Looking for a compact speaker to take up as little space as possible on your desk? Maybe you want one you can literally slip into your pocket. The JBL Go 2 is exactly that, and if you don't want to use it as a Bluetooth speaker all the time, it still has a 3.5mm audio jack (unlike most newer Bluetooth speakers these days).

Why we picked this:

Admittedly, the JBL Go 2 is a little on the older side, coming out in 2018. However, we still think it's one of the best mini Bluetooth speakers, especially for those looking for an option that's easy on the budget. The sound quality is decent, especially for just under $40 (and often lower, if you can find it on sale), the volume is impressive, and the price is pretty unbeatable. Sure, you might have to charge it more often than a speaker twice its price, but we think the money saved evens the scale plenty.

How we tested

We're still in the process of updating this roundup with hands-on tested picks for the best Bluetooth speakers. So far, we've tested (and recently added to our recommendations) the JBL Clip 4 and JBL Go 2. We're currently in the process of hands-on testing one of our current recommendations, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3. We previously tested an earlier iteration of this speaker, the Ultimate Ears WonderBoom 2. We'll also be evaluating the Sonos Move 2 as an upgrade-pick option for a future update.

We chose the rest of our picks based on user reviews, brand reliability, and spec research. We looked at the durability of the speakers, evaluated in what situations they'd be most portable, and of course, their value-to-feature ratio. In coming updates, in addition to hands-on testing the speakers already on our list, we plan on testing more speakers from Sony, JBL, Marshall, Anker Soundcore, and more.

We've also pulled the Bose SoundLink Micro from our list of recommendations as of Jan. 2024. As a speaker from 2017, we want to make sure the features it offers are still up to par with more recent releases, especially for its $119 price tag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will you be using your speakers solely for music? For podcasts? Maybe a bit of both? You should decide that now, because it will surely factor into what kind of speaker you end up getting — whether that's surround sound, Dolby Atmos, something for the great outdoors, or just plain old stereo (which is also great; don't feel pressured to get something super fancy and expensive if you don't really need it).

Not all speakers provide the same kind of sound quality, so it's important to know exactly the kind of listening experience you're looking to get before you make the purchase. Typically, smaller speakers are more portable, but their sound quality isn't quite as exceptional as a bigger device. Consider whether size or sound quality is more important to you.

When you're shopping for a new speaker, you're going to see the word "wattage" often. While that might be meaningless to you when you see it on a product page, it's actually a pretty simple concept. Basically, wattage defines the limit of how loud your speaker can go without distorting the sound. Unless you enjoy really blasting your tunes or you regularly host parties, 50 watts is normally going to be more than enough for the average listener. But if you really like to crank it up to 11, the more watts, the merrier. While smaller portable Bluetooth speakers tend to have lower wattage, there are certainly some exceptions (which you'll see within our picks below).

We always say that you should choose quality over quantity. Having one or two amazing speakers is going to get you better results than having multiple speakers that are just OK. Plus, having too many speakers around is just going to take up an unnecessary amount of space. If you have the room, we think two speakers maximum is the perfect number. Two speakers are especially ideal if you listen to a lot of music — music is normally recorded for a stereo setting, so having a left and right channel will do wonders for fidelity. And if you have a smaller space with good acoustics, one really good speaker should do the trick.

No, but it really can't hurt. Even if you're not planning on taking your speaker out by the pool during the summer, it's not out of the question that it could be a target for spills no matter where you have it in your home. It would be a shame if a rogue glass of water ended up being the demise of your brand-new speaker, so if you have the option to go waterproof, do it (unless you have your heart set on one that doesn't have that feature).
