UPDATE: Jul. 19, 2023, 5:00 a.m. EDT After conducting additional product testing, this review has been updated with new products.

It might never have occurred to you to go bladeless when looking for a new fan, but there are plenty of reasons to do so. Not only are they more aesthetically pleasing than traditional fans, but they’re also much safer for kids and pets, easier to clean, and more energy efficient.

Most of the country (most of the world, in fact) has been coping with relentless summer heat this year, with record-breaking temperatures and one heat wave after another. A bladeless fan promises to give you some relief, whether you're using it inside your home, at your office desk, or around your neck.

And to help Mashable readers find the best bladeless fans and escape the summer heat, we tried the top bladeless fans from Dyson and other brands for ourselves.

How do bladeless fans work?

First, it's important to note that bladeless fans do in fact have blades. However, these blades are contained within the cylinder-shaped portion of the fan rather than exposed to the air itself, hence the name. The concealed fan draws air into the base unit and pushes it through the ring or oval that gives these fans their distinctive shape. This air blows on you or the room as a whole, letting you enjoy cooling air without the whir of fan blades.

What to consider before buying a bladeless fan

Most bladeless fans are more energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing than their traditional counterparts, but you’ll still want to take the time to read the specs and decide what features you’re willing to splurge on. Do you want a bladeless fan that will also purify your air and act as a cooling system? If so, then it might be worth investing in the famous Dyson bladeless fan, the Pure Cool. If you’re looking for something to simply circulate the air in your living room, then a cheaper option like the CONBOLA Desk Fan will do just fine.

Do bladeless fans work well?

We have good news for anyone suffering from the latest heat wave: Bladeless fans live up to the hype. Today’s bladeless fans are just as effective as traditional fans at circulating air and cooling down a room, and often more so. As an added bonus, they’re also more energy efficient and tend to be quieter than the tower fans of old.

What features should I consider in a bladeless fan?

When choosing the best fans to beat the summer heat, you should consider both the size of the space you're trying to cool (in square feet) and whether your new fan will live on the floor or a table. You’ll also want to consider oscillation, which is how far the fan swings to the left and right. Greater oscillation will provide you with more coverage. Fan speeds, timers, and energy efficiency are other important factors to consider. If you have allergies you’ll want to opt for Dyson bladeless fans that also include a HEPA filter, as these products can do double duty as air purifiers. Lastly, most bladeless fans include a remote control and automatic shutoff for safety.

Are bladeless fans expensive?

You might assume that the best bladeless fan for you will have a premium price compared to traditional fans (and the Dyson models definitely do), but you might be surprised to know that many bladeless fans on Amazon are actually quite affordable. You can find personal bladeless fans starting at just $8.99 and larger bladeless tower fans for under $100.

Below, you'll find a top-rated bladeless fan for every budget and lifestyle need as well as insight from our own hands-on cooling tests.

Our Pick

The Dyson Purifier Cool TP07 air purifier and bladeless fan promises to “purify the whole room and cool you." That sounded sounded especially attractive to our reviewer, who runs hot even when the temperatures don't. The brand's latest TP07 model is an upgrade from former models with its advanced HEPA filtration system and intelligent sensing capabilities.

Similar to the TP04, this Dyson Pure Cool has a hollow oblong shape, with the base pulling in air, then pushing purified air out of the upper “shell.” In Mashable's cooling tests, we found this fan to be very intuitive both in terms of assembly and use. At the highest fan speed, it does produce a bit of noise, but nothing outrageous. Overall, it performed well in terms of cleaning the air and keeping a small apartment comfortable temp-wise.

While the $569 price tag is a bit outrageous, you can often find this fan on sale, although still at a high price point.

For apartment dwellers with limited space, a tower fan is particularly appealing. And due to the popularity of bladeless fans, there are a growing number of bladeless tower fans for sale in 2023. Lasko is the manufacturer behind many award-winning space heaters and fans, and the company's AirLogic Tower Fan is a great choice if you need a compact, eco-friendly cooling fan.

We should note that while this tower fan does have a washable filter, which should help with dust and odors, it's not an air purifier like Dyson's bladeless fans. Still, for about $100, it's a reliable and efficient cooling fan for the summer that won't take up too much space.

Weighing in at less than 10 pounds, this versatile bladeless fan is easily portable and can sit easily on a table, desk, or on the floor. It might be on the small side but it lacks nothing in its ability to circulate air. With three speeds and 45 degrees of oscillation, the device will quickly cool an entire room.

Unlike the CONBALA desk fan, the LivePure bladeless fan can be plugged right into the wall. It also has a sleep timer so that it can shut itself off at night.

If you run hot (as our product tester does), then having a personal bladeless fan you can take with you while out and about will be a game changer. Most personal fans are weak, barely capable of providing a whiff of cool air across your face. However, the axGear Handheld Bladeless Fan does not skimp in terms of performance, despite its compact and lightweight size — and its wildly affordable price point.

Sure, it’s a bit noisier than the other models on the list, but when you’re using this at your kids’ soccer game or while waiting for a bus, no one will be the wiser. It also has a flat base so you can set it up in front of you on your desk or while dining on your patio.

This fan was designed with energy efficiency in mind and is actually powered by a USB outlet. Even so, it provides twice the circulation speed and coverage as most traditional fans. It’s also super compact and won’t take up too much space in your bedroom or office while still providing enough air to keep you cool and comfortable.

The USB charging makes this a convenient option for a desk fan. However, if you want to simply plug your new bladeless fan into an AC outlet and forget about it, then this isn't the best choice. It's also less powerful than a Dyson bladeless fan or traditional tower fans, so we would only recommend it for use as a personal fan.

Best wearable bladeless fan

The "W" in the product name of this bladeless fan represents the key feature of the product — it's wearable, whenever, wherever, and wireless. And really, those four reasons are more than enough to love it. Wearable fans, also called wearable air conditioners, have been a major trending product over the past two years, and so we wanted to test out this popular option. With climate change on the horizon (and arguably already here), we expect these products to grow in popularity.

The convenience of being able to take this fan with you for school pickups and running errands is incredible. We also appreciated that it helped our reviewer stay cool in the car without turning on the air conditioning. Even on the lowest setting, it's plenty powerful to keep you feeling cool. The flexible arms make it easy to position the fan for optimal airflow in all the right places.

Here's another great use case for this bladeless fan. If you run hot while the rest of your household runs cold, then you can use this product to keep you cool without bothering anyone else.

If you have the budget, then you really can’t go wrong with Dyson bladeless fans, and the 2-in-1 Pure Cool Formaldehyde TP09 Air Purifier and Fan is no exception. Even folks who aren't technologically savvy should be able to set this unit up in under five minutes (and without looking at the instructions, no less). As soon as you turn it on, you get a readout of the air quality within your room on the fan base, which automatically updates in real time.

While the biggest feature on this unit is its ability to detect and break down formaldehyde, the fact that it also functions as a cooling bladeless fan is, well, pretty cool. It oscillates 350 degrees and has 10 levels of fan speed for complete room coverage. For our testing, we used it in a space about 300 square feet in size and had no issues keeping the room cool and fresh. The only downside we encountered in our testing? A curious French bulldog kept knocking it over, as the base is quite light.

How we tested

While we haven't hands-on tested all of the bladeless fans on our list, we’ve put in some quality hands-on time with the majority of them. Our real-world experience gives us first-hand insight into how these units perform. Beyond that, we conducted careful research to find a variety of affordable bladeless fans. We also specifically sought out options that cater to different use cases.

First, we prioritized bladeless fans from well-known brands like Dyson to come up with a list of options that are widely regarded to be dependable and well-made, with customer service and warranties to match. All of the fans we selected had strong customer reviews. We tried as many of these products as we could, as we wanted to compare their reputations to our own bladeless fans reviews.

For this review, we spent time testing the Dyson Pure Cool TP07 Air Purifier and Fan, the Pure Cool Formaldehyde TP09, the axGear Bladeless Handheld Fan, and the Spice of Life W Fan. The rest of the products included in this guide were selected based on research and the criteria below.

To ensure a varied range of options for different types of folks, there were a number of factors that we took into consideration before selecting a bladeless fan for testing or inclusion:

  • Fan size: Whether it was a bladeless fan for one, or an option to cool a large room, we wanted to showcase choices for people who want to stay cool just themselves, as well as those who need to cool an entire room with ease.

  • Fan speed: Fans with multiple speed settings give you greater control over how you cool your space. It also allows you to adjust the fan to a lower level when you need to quiet things down.

  • Cost: While most of these bladeless fans fall in the $100 range, we wanted to include options for shoppers who were looking for a more budget-friendly (but still high-quality) item, as well as those who were looking to treat themself with a splurge-worthy gadget with all the bells and whistles.

  • Function: A bladeless fan is something that's going to take up space in your home, so it’s nice if it can pull double duty. This helps to not only reduce the amount of clutter in your home, it also cuts down on appliance costs. So, we sought out bladeless fans that also doubled as purifiers, or were easily portable.
