UPDATE: Aug. 17, 2023, 5:00 a.m. EDT This guide has been updated with new products and information from feline health specialists.

If there's one thing cats love, it's food. Honestly, they probably love food more than they love us. However, we can't always be at their side to feed them at mealtime, as much as we wish we could.

If your cat has become accustomed to regular meal times throughout the day and your schedule doesn't quite line up with that, then consider automatic cat feeders. These pet tech products ensure that your cat gets regular meals throughout the day, and the best automatic pet feeders let you precisely control portion sizes as well.

To help Mashable readers select the best possible cat feeder for their feline, we spoke to veterinarians and feline health specialists about the pros and and cons of these popular products. We also gathered the best automatic cat feeders based on our experience, research, and expect advice.

Are automatic cat feeders good for cats?

To find out if automatic pet feeders are beneficial to our feline friends, we spoke to several feline health specialists. When used properly, and in combination with regular play and attention, automatic cat feeders can be a safe way to dispense cat food.

"Yes, automatic cat feeders can be a safe option for pet owners to use while they're away from home," says Dr. Alejandro Caos, a veterinarian with the at-home pet health service The Vets. "These feeders are designed to dispense specific portions of food at scheduled times, ensuring your cat receives their meals even in your absence. However, it's important to choose a high-quality feeder, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, and regularly clean and maintain the feeder to prevent any malfunctions or food contamination."

In addition, it's important to monitor how your cat reacts to an automatic cat feeder. Dr. Caos adds, "A camera may be helpful to ensure the feeder is not malfunctioning and dispensing food appropriately. Additionally, consider your cat's individual needs and behavior when deciding if an automatic feeder is the right choice for them." This is especially important for households with two cats or multiple pets who may compete for food.

Are automatic feeders bad for cats?

Automatic pet feeders work best for short periods of time, such as when you're at the office. For cat parents who are going to be away for an extended period of time, consider using both automatic food dispensers and a cat sitter.

"I think there is some risk here if no one is checking on the pet for days," says Dr. Allison Foust, DVM, a veterinarian with All-Star Veterinary Clinic, which also hosts a popular animal health roundtable on TikTok (@allstarveterinaryclinic). "My recommendation is to always have a pet sitter come at least once daily to make sure everything is okay in the home, that the cat is eating/feeder is working if one is used, scoop the litter, have playtime if the cat allows it, etc."

Remember: Dogs and cats can get separation anxiety just like humans, a fact that many pandemic pet parents learned the hard way after suddenly returning to work. So while an automatic cat food dispenser can ensure that your four-legged friend won't go hungry when you're not around, special care should be taken for cats with separation anxiety.

"Automatic cat feeders can have both positive and negative impacts on a cat's mental and emotional well-being," says Dr. Caos. "On [the] one hand, they can provide a routine and predictability in meal times, which some cats find comforting. On the other hand, if overused, automatic feeders might contribute to a lack of interaction and engagement with the owner, potentially leading to boredom or loneliness. It's important for cat owners to balance the convenience of automatic feeders with regular playtime, social interaction, and enrichment activities."

In addition, Dr. Caos warns that using automatic feeders for cats improperly can pose some health risks as well. "These include malfunctions leading to over or underfeeding, food spoilage if wet food isn't properly refrigerated, potential food aggression among multiple cats, limited observation of your cat's eating habits and health, and potentially reducing mental stimulation from interactive feeding. To minimize these risks, choose a dependable feeder, monitor your cat's response, and combine automated feeding with interactive methods for a balanced approach to your cat's well-being."

Dr. Foust generally recommends cat puzzle toys over automatic feeders, as the former provide more enrichment. "Personally I will only recommend automatic feeders in certain circumstances... I personally love to use food toys/puzzles for both dry and wet food for enrichment in the environment and normally I advise against the traditional one food bowl per cat per house as this provides zero enrichment to their lives." Dr. Foust adds that smart cat feeders and cameras can help pet parents keep an eye on mealtime when cat sitters aren't available.

Can automatic food dispensers handle wet food?

Most automatic cat feeders are designed for dry or semi-moist kibble. There are only a few models that include refrigeration for wet food. However, the experts we spoke to agreed that even automatic pet feeders with coolers still carry a level of risk. The longer the wet food is stored, the greater the risk of contamination and food spoilage. Be very cautious when using refrigerated wet food dispensers.

Don't forget about water!

Currently, automatic pet feeders are designed to dispense food only, and your pets will still need a supply of safe drinking water. According to the Cornell Feline Health Center, "Cats need to consume about 4 ounces of water per five pounds of lean body weight per day, so the average 10-pound cat should drink about one cup of water per day. It’s important to realize that cats that eat wet food, which can contain up to 80% water, may drink less, and cats that eat dry food usually take more of their daily water requirement in by drinking."

Consider using a cat sitter or gravity water dispenser if you're going to be away from home for more than 24 to 36 hours.

So, which automatic cat feeder is best?

Imagine being able to sleep in late without cats pawing at your face because they're hungry, or working overtime without feeling guilty about missing kitty's mealtime. With the best automatic cat feeders, you can make that a reality, and your cat will most certainly thank you for it. Just remember to combine your new cat feeder with interactive cat toys and other fun cat gift ideas.

To help you pick the right feeder, we researched the internet's favorite models and hands-on tested others, breaking them down based on the features cat owners care about most. Whether you’re looking for a no-frills, basic gravity feeder, or a full-fledged product to program perfectly timed and portioned meals, find the best automatic cat feeder right here.

Our Pick

For single or multi-cat homes, the PetSafe Simply Feed allows pet parents to program up to 12 different daily meals, ranging in size from one-eighth of a cup to four cups. The large capacity hopper holds up to 24 cups of dry or semi-moist food at a time, which should last most felines quite a while before needing to be refilled.

One standout feature that cat owners will love is the slow-feed option. This mode dispenses your cat’s food over a period of 15 minutes, which helps prevent your kitty from bingeing and then vomiting their meal. There’s also an immediate feed button that allows you to give your feline a little nibble in between their regularly scheduled mealtimes.

It comes with its own bowl and stand, which attaches to the feeder, but you can also use it with your kitty’s favorite dish. The pet-proof dispenser keeps prying paws out, and food fresh. The majority of the parts are top rack dishwasher-safe and are made of BPA-free plastic and stainless steel. For all these reasons, we think it's the best cat feeder for most people.

For short trips away, this is one of the best automatic cat feeders for sale right now. The PetSafe 5-Meal Automatic Feeder features five chambers that can hold up to one cup of food each. Because of its covered, spinning design, it can be used with both wet and dry foods of varying shapes and sizes — there’s also nothing to get jammed, unlike with hopper-style feeders. You can set a schedule for the feeder to rotate at the same time every day.

The BPA-free, dishwasher-safe food tray makes for easier cleanup, too. Keep in mind that while there are five chambers, one will be available to your cat right away. The spinning system is nice, as you can check how much food your kitty has (or hasn’t) eaten at the end of your trip.

Because of its compact and lightweight design, this feeder is also a great pick for when you have to travel with your cat and want to keep them on their regularly scheduled meals. Even if you aren’t super tech-savvy, this feeder is easy to program.

Petlibro makes a variety of automatic pet feeders, but this particular model is perfect for cat owners who want lots of control over mealtime. It's made from high quality materials, including a stainless steel feeding bowl, a built-in desiccant bag for freshness, and BPA-free plastic parts. Most of these parts can also be removed for easy cleaning.

Best of all, with the Petlibro programmable pet feeder, you can schedule up to six meals per day and precisely control the portion size of each meal. This means your feline friend will always get the right amount of dry cat food — no more, no less. Plus, it has a capacity large enough to keep most cats fed for up to 12 days before it needs to be refilled, and its twisting lid-lock design ensures that food stays fresh and secure.

The automatic cat food dispenser also allows you to record a 10-second voice message that will play at the start of feeding time, letting you reinforce the bond between you and your cat even when you can't physically be there. Plus, with both a USB-C outlet and battery power, you don't have to worry about power outages, though the batteries are not included.

If you're looking for all of the bells and whistles, you can upgrade to the WiFi version of this product for app-control. However, the regular version is plenty smart and with a surprisingly affordable price tag. Plus, an on-page coupon is often available that knocks $15 off the price.

We recently had a chance to put the Cat Mate C3000 Automatic Dry Food Pet Feeder through its paces, and were pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to assemble, program, and get started. Best of all, the top hopper can easily hold up to a week’s worth of your pet’s food, making it ideal for when you have to go away on a long weekend and can’t bring them along.

We loved that everything except the base that houses the electronics is dishwasher safe, making for quick and easy cleanups. One downside we found was that its feeding units might not be 100% accurate depending on the size of your kitty’s kibble. It says 3 feeding units is equal to about a quarter cup of food, but when we measured the dispensed meal it was actually more than that – something to double check if your pet is on a weight management diet like ours.

Finally, the lid to the food hopper isn't as secure as other automatic pet feeders, so households with dogs may want to pick another option.

Amazon Basics is known for making low-cost, good-enough versions of everyday essentials, and it can be a great place to stock up on pet care basics. Case in point: this gravity cat feeder set, which comes with two gravity dispensers for food and water. Because these dispensers rely on gravity rather than electronic dispensers, you can't set schedules or control portion size. At the same time, you'll never have to worry about these dispensers malfunctioning or running out of power while you're away.

Each of the dispensers holds a significant amount of food and water — six pounds of dry food or one gallon of water. According to the Cornell Feline Health Center, part of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, the average cat should drink about one cup of water per day, which means this dispenser holds about 16 days worth of drinking water.

These gravity cat feeders aren't dishwasher-friendly, so you'll have to clean them by hand. If you have canines in your household, then it's possible a curious and determined dog could open up the plastic container and lid and help themselves to some kitty food, so be mindful if your cat lives in mixed company. However, those are pretty minor drawbacks overall.

This robot-shaped Iseebiz feeder is great for smaller cats (or other small pets) who don't need too much food to be dispensed per meal. It can hold enough food to feed your pet for up to 15 days with optimal portion control and it's rather fairly priced for having all the perks of other, more expensive feeders. It has an IR detector to prevent clogging and overflowing, and its screw-lock design keeps food fresh inside while simultaneously keeping curious pets out.

Best of all, you can create an optional 10-second recording that will call your pet to the feeder when it's time to eat, even when you can't be there to do it yourself.

PetSafe earned three spots in this shopping guide, and it was our top pick for the overall best automatic cat feeder. If you're looking for a splurge-worthy automatic feeder with smart features, then this is your best bet. That being said, the smart features on this PetSafe automatic feeder won't appeal to everyone.

Let's start with the positives. This cat feeder has a generous 6L capacity and can be controlled via the PetSafe app, which lets you set portion size, schedule meals, and control the feeder via Alexa. You have a lot of control over feeding time and meal size. This feeder can schedule up to 12 meals per day with precise portion sizes. It also has a slow-feed setting for cats that chow down on their kibble too quickly.

As for the negatives, the app control can be limiting. There are no controls on the feeder itself, so if you encounter problems with the app, you'll have no way to use the feeder at all. With that caveat in mind, this is a versatile automatic food dispenser for cats.

If you’re looking for the best automatic cat feeder for wet food, then this is the feeder you’ll want. It has five separate meal compartments that hold up to 11.5 ounces of wet or dry food, plus two ice packs to keep wet food fresh. While other pet feeders can accommodate semi-moist kibble, this is one of the only automatic feeders for cats made for wet food specifically.

Thanks to a built-in LCD screen, the Cat Mate Automatic Digital Pet Feeder is easy to program, so your pets can eat at precise times. It’s also got a close-fitting, tamper-proof lid to keep even the most determined cats and dogs from getting their paws on an early feeding time. It also takes 3 AA-batteries, which are easier to find than D batteries — the type of battery used by the other feeders on this list — and generally those batteries will last up to 12 months. The bowls in the feeder are also removable for easier cleaning in the dishwasher.

The only significant drawback to this feeder is that it works best for small dogs or cats — you’ll likely want something with bigger portions than 1.45 cups if you have a large breed dog.

Remember: Even though the ice packs can keep wet cat food fresh, there's no guarantee this food won't spoil over a longer period of time.

How we tested

While we haven't hands-on tested all of these automatic cat feeders (with the exception of the Cat Mate C3000 Automatic Dry Food Pet Feeder), we put forth hours of careful research to find a variety of quality automatic cat feeders, and specifically sought out options to cater to different use cases.

We also spoke to veterinarians about the pros and cons of using an automatic food dispenser for cats. Specifically, we wanted to know: Are automatic feeders good for cats? In addition to recommending products, we wanted cat owners to have the cat health information they need to keep their cats well-fed, happy, and healthy.

In selecting the best automatic cat feeders, we first prioritized products from well-known brands, particularly PetSafe automatic feeders. We created a list of options that are widely regarded to be dependable and well-made, with customer service and warranties to match. Each of the automatic cat feeders on this list has hundreds, if not thousands, of automatic cat feeder reviews—a generally reliable sign that the product is often in stock and available for purchase.

To ensure a varied range of options for different types of pet parents, there were a number of factors that we took into consideration, including:

  • Capacity: One of the benefits of an automatic cat feeder is that it takes the hassle out of feeding your kitty multiple times a day. If you’re constantly refilling the hopper, it sort of defeats the purpose. The best automatic pet feeders can easily hold a week’s worth of food and have a tightly sealed system to keep it fresh.

  • Cost: Most of these automatic cat feeders we selected fall in the $100 range. However, we wanted to include options for shoppers who need a more budget-friendly (but still high-quality) item, as well as those who were looking to treat their feline companion with a splurge-worthy pet tech gadget with all the bells and whistles.

  • Ease of programming: The best automatic cat feeder should be easy to program (and adjust) so that you won’t give up. All of the models we chose have intuitive controls and were easy to adjust.

  • Clean up process: Cats might keep themselves fastidiously clean, but that’s not always the case for their food area. The ability to pop the feeder (including hopper and bowl) into the dishwasher for quick and easy cleanup is a must for busy pet parents.

With all of this in mind, and with recommendations from veterinarians, we selected automatic cat feeders that we would happily purchase ourselves or recommend to a close friend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some things to keep in mind before making a purchase:

  • Wet or dry food: Which food type does your cat usually eat? Wet dispensers will require daily cleaning and more attention than dry food feeders.

  • Your cat's needs: While automatic feeders should never be a replacement for human interaction, consider your and your cat's routines. Would the feeder be useful for days when you're busy in meetings, or are you planning to leave the house for a while? If it's the latter, your feline friend could develop separation anxiety so it's important to pick one that best suits their needs (like one that allows you to leave voice recordings).

  • Overall functionality: If you'll be using the feeder often and have a dishwasher, look for dishwasher-safe containers or bowls so you aren't stuck hand-washing each week. If you're someone who often mixes up times, pick a programmable feeder that will remember for you. If your cat will continue to snack all day long, opt out of a gravity feeder and go for one that dispenses a specific amount of food.

The younger a cat is, the easier it will likely be to train them to get used to an automatic cat feeder, but a cat of any age should acclimate relatively well. It's food, after all, so even if they're apprehensive of the fancy new robot hanging out in their feeding area, they will eventually eat when they get hungry enough. That said, there are a few tips and tricks to help the process move along smoothly:

  • Remember that cats love routine and familiarity, so don't be surprised if your cat turns up their nose at the new device. Give them time to get used to the automatic feeder's presence — especially if it makes noise — and let them sniff and examine it for as long as they need to get comfortable.

  • If your cat is not already adjusted to a regular feeding schedule, try getting them into that routine first. If they're used to having a bowl of food available to them at all times, an automatic cat feeder will come as quite a shock.

  • Don't remove your cat's current food bowl from the area; keep it near the automatic feeder so they can still get some food even if they're a little skittish around the new device. Leave out both the old bowl and the new feeder for a few weeks, decreasing the food in the old bowl while increasing the food in the automatic cat feeder.

  • Keep as close of an eye on your cat's behavior around the food bowls as you can. When they are eating primarily from the automatic feeder, you can start to take away their old pet food bowl for good.

  • A surefire way to coax your cat to the automatic feeder is by placing some of their favorite treats in it.

The most important thing to remember as you train your cat to eat from an automatic cat feeder is that you can’t expect to plop the automatic feeder in front of your cat and immediately run off for a weekend away. This new cat feeding process will take a little time and patience, so be sure to plan ahead and give them lots of reassurance and cuddles along the way.

Even with the best automatic cat feeders, you should still hire a pet sitter to scoop your feline’s litter box or boarding facility to keep an eye on your four-legged friend if you're jetting out on vacation. In addition, make sure that your chosen product has a secure lid so that mischievous dogs and cats can't open the hopper and help themselves to an all-you-can-eat buffet.

The best automatic cat feeders are ideal for dry cat food. They are typically sealed well enough to prevent dry cat food from getting stale over time. The feeder should accommodate kibble of just about any size or shape and dispense it without clogging or overflowing. All automatic feeders for cats can handle dry kibble, but a handful can also serve up semi-moist or wet food as well.

Because automatic pet feeders store food for several days (or weeks), most feeders are not designed to house wet food or semi-moist food, both of which can spoil easily in a few hours’ time. However, if your cat prefers wet food (or a mix of dry and wet food), some pet feeders are designed with a cooling mechanism to make wet food delivery possible.

Some automatic cat food dispensers include ice packs, which can help keep wet food fresh. However, even these products can only keep wet food safe for a very limited window of time, so there's always a level of risk that spoilage will occur.

Some of the automatic cat food dispensers we've featured, including the PetSafe Simply Feed, can dispense separate meals for two cats. Even so, automatic cat feeders may not be a good solution for households with multiple cats and/or dogs, especially if your pets display competitive behavior around food. You can find automatic pet feeders designed to dispense separate meals for two cats, but this can result in one cat being overfed while another goes hungry.
